Starting chess from scratch in Barcelona is easiest in a class. The Escola Catalana d'Escacs in the Eixample has groups for children and adults by level, the school of Miguel Illescas in Gràcia teaches beginners, children and adults alike, and offers a free trial class, and Peón Negro in Sants runs beginners' groups for children and an adult beginners' class in the evening.
Clubs help too: Torrenegra, Catalunya Escacs Club, Torreblanca, Peona i Peó, Sant Joan Despí and Dos Torres in Sant Cugat have starter groups, and GLOP Club arranges classes on request. The Casinet d'Hostafrancs and the Barceloneta civic centre have had open groups where adults and children start from zero. Ask each teacher about level, group size and the language of the class.
